Waste Diversion Elevated Enviro Ratings:
Baby Food Squeeze Packs
Elevated Enviro reviews everyday products to see how much of them can be diverted from landfills, after use. Today’s line up is three different baby food squeeze packs. Gerber’s, Love Child and Safeway Compliments.
The Love Child and Safeway versions are a mix of plastic and foil with a plastic cap inside of the package. All three of these materials would have to be separated for it to be recycled. Most technology to do this is not available. As a result this package, after use typically gets landfilled.
The Gerber’s is made completely of plastic. However, we do not know the grade or quality of the plastic. Plastics of known grades get sorted and sent to a facility to be washed, shreded and melted down to become plastic pellets. This can’t happen if we don’t know the grade as in most cases you can not mix different grades of plastic. With out knowing the grade this product is very likely to be landfilled.
We give all three packs a 0.5 out of 5.
