Waste Diversion Elevated Enviro Ratings:
Aveeno Active Naturals
Elevated Enviro reviews how much of Aveeno Active Naturals Lotion can be diverted from the landfill after use, waste diversion. We give products ratings based on how well they match reduce, reuse and recycle. Single use plastic is piling up in our landfills and our oceans and our intent to is make observations as to why this is happening through the use of our everyday products.
Aveeno does a nice job of not having excessive amounts of plastic packaging. You can the buy the product as shown in the picture, no plastic wrap and no paper box. The lotion typically gets used thoughtout the use and the left over could be cut open and used if eager enough. When you pop open the lid there is not the typical foil or plastic flim you need to pull off, this is nice as it reduces waste here.
The rest of the product, however, is very likely to head tot he landfill. The quality and grade of the plastic is unknown. Different grades of plastic have different markets, some not at all. Plastic also have different types of quality, lower quality doesn’t have much of a market. Without knowing what grade and quality the consumer doesn’t know if they are buying a recyclable product and the recyclers don’t know if the product is recyclable. This leads the product to being landfilled.
The plastic lid is small in size. The portion that opens up is very prone to breaking. If the lid were somehow to make it to the sorting facility it would likely snap reducing its size further. This would likely miss the sorting process and thus be landfilled.
As a result of the unknown plastic grade and quality, along with the small size, we give this product a 2 out of 5.
