Waste Diversion Elevated Enviro Rating:
Swiffer Duster
Elevated Enviro sees that waste diversion can create healthier communities where we work and live. A big part of the waste we create is with everyday products. We look at them through reduce, reuse and recycle. Today’s video reviews Swiffer Dusters.
The outside packaging is all paper, a nice start. The paper can be recycled and diverted from the landfill. Things go bad quickly. The rest of the product, in most cases, can not be recycled. The plastic wand and application comes in a plastic bag. The bag, the wand and the application is made of unknown quality of plastic and all are small in size. Both of these factors will likely send these products to the landfill.
Perhaps the most concerning to us are the dusting pads. They are made of an unknown material, it seems synthetic. If it were a natural fibre one could toss it in to the organics bin as most dusting debris is organic. However the synthetic material can not be composted and it also can’t be recycled as the dust would contaminate the recycling.
As a result of all the unrecycable plastic we give Swiffer Dusters a 0.5 out of 5.
